If you haven't had the opportunity to attend one of Comstock Characters' reenactments of Stephen Mather, you can still read Steve's book about the inspiring story of how Park Service Director Mather led the creation of the National Park Service and then went on to carefully craft the Agency's role to preserve and protect America's precious natural area and resources for future generations.
The Passionate Creation of the National Park Service- Death Valley, Borax and Stephen Mather tells the story of how history converged at highly improbable cross roads.
The National Park Service Organic Act of 1916 celebrated its Centennial in 2016. Stephen Mather's 150th Birthday was celebrated the following year on July 4th. He would be rewarded and gratified to learn that his vision to create, define, and embolden the National Park Service, as the custodian of America's most significant natural, cultural, and historic sites is continuing to guide our national park system into its next century.
